One of LLA’s primary goals is to identify, engage and mobilize the next generation of leaders in the business, government, education, non-profit and art sectors. LLA offers an eight month Leadership Academy to 12-16 participants.
Participants in the Leadership Academy are selected in a competitive application process. Leadership Academy fellows must commit to participating in intensive full-day leadership training seminars each month from February through September. The program curriculum includes seminars presented by business, education, political, and community/non-profit leaders. In addition, the three-day LLA-Stanford Leadership Summer Program is a collaboration with Stanford University and taught by Stanford faculty.
The LLA Academy program uplifts its cohort members to undertake impactful community projects aimed at benefiting the Latina/o/x community. These projects, undertaken from inception to completion, align with the academy's pillars of government, business, nonprofits, and education. Leveraging skills learned in the academy such as advocacy, organizing, and communication, these projects aim to make a tangible positive difference.
Previous projects have included advocacy campaigns, educational initiatives, alumni events, and mentorship programs. Below is COHORT 13's Community Project that focuses on the collection of Latino/a/x/e leaders in Silicon Valley.
LLA and Stanford University developed the Stanford Leadership Summer Program, which is a unique and strategic collaboration between LLA and Stanford University’s Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity.
Each year, the Leadership Academy culminates in a 3-day residency leadership training program on-campus at Stanford University featuring advanced leadership and education workshops prepared and presented by distinguished faculty from Stanford University. Program participants are housed on-campus at Stanford University for the 3-day event, which provides a unique environment for learning and collaboration between and among Academy fellows and Stanford’s world-class faculty.
The LLA Leadership Academy and the Stanford Leadership Summer Program provide participants with the tools to become a valuable community asset and assume positions of responsible leadership in the Latino community and the Silicon Valley.
Since its inception, more than 100 local leaders have graduated from the Leadership Academy. Academy graduates have been elected to key local offices including the San Jose City Council, planning commissions, and school boards, and are in key leadership positions throughout our community, including non-profits and leaders in education and local business.
In August 2015 LLA and Stanford University held its first leadership summit, a full-day retreat and summit led by Stanford faculty on the issues of immigration, integration and identity, and the Latino Vote including voter identity, status, and turnout.
